Sports Redux: Someone's Gotta Pay
We're really glad we're not the New York Jets. Especially today. First of all, if you were a Jet, you'd have to be outside for hours and hours in this weather. Second of all, you're not a very good football team, and you are playing today against a remarkably good team. Third, you're the team whose coach finked out Bill Belichick early this year, putting the Patriots on a mission to destroy everything in their path and leave no doubt that they're the class of the league. Fourth, even if the opponent doesn't completely bruise your ego, the Foxborough fans - cold, wet, and bloodthirsty - will no doubt make your day thoroughly unpleasant.
Now, we know the "Any Given Sunday" theory. And if the Jets run the ball at their best, the Pats' run defense might struggle like they did a couple of weeks ago. In theory, anything can happen. But the Pats don't want to hear about theories. This is the Jets team that called out their coach, questioned the legacy of Belichick's Superbowls, and, as the Pats would tell you, it's a division game. If you don't think the team is extra-motivated to send the Jets home bruised and battered, you don't know the Patriots.
Belichick says, for his part, that he hasn't thought about the much-hyped postgame handshake with Eric Mangini. Apparently, there are people who care about this as much as about the game.
The Bruins got back to their old winning ways, shutting out Columbus 2-0 behind Alex Auld's 32 saves. They hardly gave Auld a cusion, though; Jeremy Reich scored his first career goal in the first period, and that was it until Marco Sturm's empty-netter clinched it. The Celtics are in Toronto; last time they were there, Ray Allen won it at the buzzer, but Ray won't be playing today, still nursing a sore ankle.
