Sports Redux: Ray Comes "Home", Is Upstaged
The Celtics won their 24th game last night! That's what mathemeticians call a "significant figure", because they won 24 games last season. That was along with 58 losses, compared with 3 this year. So they theoretically could go 1-54 the rest of the way and still show improvement.
But that won't work. They need to keep winning like they did last night in Seattle. The evening began as the Ray Allen Show; Ray spent several disappointing years with the Sonics, and was honored for his valiant attempts with a plaque, several standing ovations, and probably a grande latte.
Once the game started, though, it turned into a reprisal of the "Pierce and Pierce Alone" Celtics era. The Truth scored 37, mostly in the second half, to turn a tight ballgame into a comfy 104-96 win. Allen had only 10 (must've been decaf), but Garnett had 23 with 14 rebounds. Old friends Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak played well off Seattle's bench.
BC's season ends this evening in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. The Eagles are 5-point favorites, and also have the advantage of having a number of Michigan Staters suspended for violations of team rules. The way college football's gone this season, don't be shocked to see every other (more prestigious) bowl game end in a tie and the Eagles sneak into #1. Well, a little shocked.
