South Boston Vs. Menino

122807-snow-shovel.jpgThe space-saver war continues. Yesterday, Donovan Slack followed up on the city's attempts to get a few residents of South Boston to stop saving parking spaces after a snowstorm, even though they can keep the space for 48 hours.

Apparently a few protesters feel that tradition trumps the law:

But sending a special crew to South Boston angered some in the neighborhood. They interpreted the move as another offensive in the years-long battle between City Hall and South Boston over the time-honored tradition.
"He's really got it in for us, let me tell you," said Joanne McDevitt, a longtime East Broadway resident. "I really feel like he's singling out South Boston."

While Bostonist does not know Ms. McDevitt, her words indicate that she believes it is all about her. Does the world revolve around Ms. McDevitt and we didn't even know it? Did we just celebrate the wrong holiday?
In their staggering self-absorption, the residents who are griping about the mayor have forgotten that the snowstorm is over. Even Bill Linehan wrote, according to Slack, "Don't be selfish!"
Joe Keohane at Boston Daily just ripped South Boston a new one and compared the complainers (no need to suggest that all South Boston residents hog spots) to Confederates: "Of course Southie, which is as close to a lawless breakaway province as we have in Boston, responds to this like a bunch of Southerners who got their Confederate flags confiscated by the federal government."
You know, if the aforementioned residents who cling to their spots really want choice parking, they could move to South Carolina. It's warmer down there.
That said, Bostonist did suggest yesterday that South Boston could probably use a municipal parking garage that would be free or cut-rate if there's a snowstorm. With that kind of garage, then there would be no question over whether or not there are places to park.
