Councilor Ross Fights Apartment-Packing
While the idea of living with seven or so people in an apartment that should only hold four sounds disgusting, it's kind of fun and a reasonable option for cash-strapped college students. However, Boston City Councilor Michael Ross wants to put an end to it.
Ross wants only four students, max, to live in any one apartment. According to Scott Van Voorhis, he wants his plan to be part of the city's zoning code. The City Council has already passed an ordinance on the four-students-per-apartment rule. One college student told Boston NOW when it passed, "What are they going to do? Break in and count people?"
Ross also argues that the proposal will help prevent landlords from jacking up the rents while students get stuck living in closets.
So, the question remains--is it how many people you live with or who you live with that causes a problem? Seven geeks in an apartment probably won't cause an issue if the worst they're doing is file-sharing, but if you get one nasty, beer-logged dude who likes to break stuff, then the neighborhoods still have a problem.

Jacking up the rents? Hmmm, I seem to recall my rent dropping when I started paying 1/5 instead of 1/4. Glad I'm over the border in Brookline.

Hey, how about Ross deals first with snow, nay, ICE removal all around the Fens & the Fenway where people on crutches are trying to hobble without going down?
Hey, Boston...you want young people to come and the only message they're getting is "please, go..."
Now you're talking!
