Sports Redux: Looking Ahead
There are plenty of reasons to like Doc Rivers right now. Twenty-eight reasons, actually. But we wish we could kindly remind Rivers and the Celtics that you have to focus on winning the little games in order for the big games to mean anything.
The Celts welcomed Memphis onto the TD Banknorth Garden floor on Friday night and nearly opened the door for the Grizzlies to win. Ray Allen struggled (two points overall) and, while the bench stepped up hugely yet again, coach and players alike noted that their focus seemed to be elsewhere during what would become a 100-96 victory.
"It was our worst focus of the year, maybe because of the Detroit game,” Rivers said post-game. Tsk, tsk, tsk! Take a note from those football players down in Foxboro: . But tonight they face down the Pistons for the first time since December 19 - the last time the Celtics lost a game.
Roger Clemens now has a couple of things coming 'round the bend. Clemens' 60 Minutes piece airs on Sunday night, and continuing to claim innocence on the steroid front. If the Mike Wallace interview ends with Clemens stating the Brian McNamee was incorrect in telling George Mitchell that he injected Clemens with steroids - and the excerpt releases Friday indicates just that - McNamee is threatening to sue Clemens. To top it all off, Clemens has now been called to speak under oath to Congress! The fun never stops when you're the Rocket.
The Bruins are looking ahead, both to tonight's game against the Devils and to the idea of having Boston host NHL's next outdoor game. And, of course, if you're going to talk about doing anything quirky and sports-related, you have to talk about having something take place at Fenway Park. It's just what you do.
