The Trial of the Bad Bachelor Begins

080707_justice.jpgOn the surface, Gary Zerola's story looks no different from a blotter entry about a scumbag who attempts to rape women. Zerola allegedly raped two women in Massachusetts. Then, while out on bail, he allegedly drugged and raped another woman in Miami.

But Zerola is different because he became the person he used to defend in court. He went from dashing, respected lawyer--a former assistant DA for Suffolk County--to alleged rapist. Zerola was a lawyer in Boston whose own experience growing up as a foster child prompted him to work on behalf of other foster children. He soon attracted notice in the community, and it didn't hurt that he was handsome.

Eventually, the media came calling, and People named him one of its most eligible bachelors. The reality show The Bachelor also considered him to be one of their stars. (Somewhere, show producers and entertainment lawyers are sighing in relief.)

His trial started today, and perhaps we'll find out what went wrong.

Update: Zerola acquitted for more rape charges, but rearrested for peeing in public.

All charges alleged until proven under law.
