Sports Redux: Any Given Wednesday

nightofa1000cats.jpgThere's lots of ways to look at it. After 32 good games, we were due for a stinker. Every NBA team is competent and capable of winning any game (well, the Knicks, but you know what we mean). We had serious letdown potential after the Detroit high. Ray Allen and Big Baby were in street clothes.

If any of the above consoles you, it shouldn't. The Celtics looked just God-awful last night, and suffered their first double-digit loss of the season at the hands of the mediocre Charlotte Bobcats. After a sluggish first half, the Garden crowd waited expectantly for the C's to turn on the jets and finish Charlotte off. And waited. And waited. And went home disappointed. If anything, the Celts regressed in the second half.

In a game like this, the list of culprits is long and distinguished. Paul Pierce and Tony Allen weren't hitting anything. The 3-point shooting was embarassing, and they never seemed to get out of the bad habit. There were mini-hot streaks by Garnett and Eddie House, but Doc pulled them at their allotted times and gave them a chance to cool off. There were defensive breakdowns (see: Pierce and Jason Richardson) and inexplicable dumb fouls. There was even an Airball Bonanza by Scalabrine, who fired two straight in the second (Scal earned some redemption with a crowd-rocking dunk late in the game). It was a team effort. Refocus. Jersey on Friday.
