Veggieist reviews Wheeler's Black Label Vegan Ice Cream

icecream.jpg
That's right, you're not seeing things - VEGAN ice cream! A common misconception about keeping a vegan diet is that you have you to totally give up all your old favorite and sinful foods. While being a vegan does mean that your diet is more focused on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains it certainly doesn't require that you sit at home eating nothing but broccoli! There are many yummy vegan desserts out there to satisfy your sweet tooth, and Bostonist was lucky enough to try four of the many great flavors of Wheeler's Black Label Vegan Ice Cream: Pumpkin, White Russian, Pina Colada, and Chocolate Chocolate Chip. Our first reaction was simple. Wow!
The pumpkin was amazing - the flavor was very strong with just the perfect amount of spice. It was certainly a nice seasonal departure from standard ice cream flavors. Next we tried the White Russian which was decadent and creamy; we would be seriously surprised if anyone could discern that it was non-dairy without being told. While the Pina Colada flavor was not our favorite of the bunch it had a nice bright tropical flavor with chewy bits of coconut. Finally, the Chocolate Chocolate Chip is one of their most popular flavors and we can certainly see why. The ice cream tastes wonderfully rich with just the rich amount of thick crunchy chocolate bits.

So it tastes delicious, thats all well and good, but how healthy is it? We show you the nutritional info after the jump.

Nutritional data of 1/2 cup of Wheeler's Vegan Vanilla ice cream compared to standard dairy ice cream:

Wheelers: 80 calories, 1.5g fat, 0g protein, 17g carbs, 7mg sodium, 0g cholesterol, 11g sugars, 0g fiber.

Ben & Jerry's Original Vanilla: 240 calories, 16g fat, 4g protein, 21g carbs, 60mg sodium, 75mg cholesterol, 19g sugars, 0g fiber.

The numbers most certainly speak for themselves. I hope that most of us would prefer to not have our dessert with an extra helping of artery-clogging cholesterol, and when Wheeler's ice cream tastes so gosh-darn good we beg to ask - why would treat yourself with anything else?

All in all we were very impressed with Wheeler's, we're pleased to see a Boston-based company that is working hard, and succeeding, at getting the word out about their great vegan product.

Many thanks to Wheeler's for supplying Bostonist with a taste of their yummy flavors. The picture and nutritional info in this post from The Ice Cream Project. Check out their website for more information on how to get your hands on their products.

But how do you get the stuff if you're not a hot shot/big time reporter? 8-)

Mmm, that looks good, but Marci's right, there's no location info on their website. Is it an order-online thing?

Can't be bought yet. That's the weird thing. All this publicity, but no way to get it. I seem to remember the ice cream being carried by a local restaurant, but then not.

">Here's their blog, to stay better on top of things. They have also offered to let us try more of their ice cream at future Boston Vegan Association potlucks, so we will definitely take them up on that the next time we get one up on our calendar.

Hm. My preview shows errors with the links, so:

I will never buy anything from these Wheeler Ice Cream creeps and I encourage you to refrain as well. They parked their van in the middle of Dartmouth street in Boston at rush hour yesterday to make a delivery, freezing traffic for several blocks so their driver wouldn't be inconvenienced. When I called the store to ask that they not do this, "Emily" hung up on me. When I called back, "Emily" refused to give me the owner's contact info. If you want to support a business that doesn't give a crap about other people, Wheeler's Ice Cream is for you. Else, you should take your business someplace else.

John
