Tell Us What We Don't Know: Longfellow Bridge Needs Repair
The Longfellow Bridge, which looks a little busted, is in terrible condition, the Herald's Casey Ross reports. Of course, anyone who has seen the bridge could have told you that. The state has already made $2 million in repairs. And it still seems a little busted.
Here's the details on what's been done and what will be done:
[Rick Sullivan of the Department of Conservation and Recreation] said DCR has spent $1.2 million since August to replace steel beams and remove dangling decorative steel along the length of the 100-year-old bridge. He said the agency will need to spend at least another $500,000 to keep the bridge operational until a $200 million rehabilitation slated to begin in 2010.
After the Minnesota bridge collapse, the state doesn't have much of a choice. But they're also telling us not to panic.
In more "Tell Us What We Don't Know" news, all these repairs will make driving rotten and will cost a lot of money. After waiting for so long for the Big Dig to solve all our problems, this is bad, but it's hardly unexpected.
