Golden Globes Live Coverage

Golden GlobesLeaving aside the question of whether the event is newsworthy, Bostonist will be live-blogging the world's latest entertainment incarnation: an awarference (awards + press conference?). We're not sure the word will catch on, but we are interested in seeing how interesting (or soul-crushingly boring) the event will be. And we'd also like to discover if NBC will succeed in putting on a successful prom despite the lack of enthusiasm on the part of those nerdy, dateless writers (who are just like us!). Stay tuned to discover the details with us in real time, and check the noms if you're following along at home.

Not only has the awards event been canceled, some afterparties have suffered as well. How's Hollywood supposed to have a great weekend when the Globes aren't on? We can drink wildly, of course, but what's the excuse other than just another Sunday night? Join our jumbled but enjoyable coverage after the jump.

9:40 E!'s coverage is off the air, but NBC is dragging it out with Nancy's keyhole neckline. Now, The Soup is on E!, which pleases us more than any of the GG coverage, and will surely be far more informative and entertaining. They're re-running that "sta-testicle" debacle, which never gets old. Also, nursing TMI from The View. We're sticking with The Soup, but since we missed some winners (thanks a lot, NBC), check 'em out at the Golden Globes site: 2008 Golden Globes Winners. Conclusion: NBC goes home sober and alone, E! is gettin' crunk at the afterparty. The winner in this year's Golden Globes coverage is clear.

9:35 E! correspondents make the astute observation that this way isn't the same as the real Golden Globes with the nominees and red carpet. Really? Well, at least E! has red walls and red flowers to make up for the lack of carpet. We do appreciate their appreciation of Tina Fey's best TV comedy actress win. And haha, what do you know--NBC just announced that win now.

9:32 Best TV Actor, Comedy: David Duchovny. NBC is just now reporting what E! came up with 15 minutes ago. Totally subpar coverage, NBC--E!'s prom is kicking your butt. In fact, we're pretty sure we know what TV Comedy is going to win even before you announce it! Your prom is decorated with last year's crepe paper, while E!'s prom has sequins and spiked punch.

9:31 Best Drama: Atonement. Boo. As E! predicted, this was picked to appease those for whom There Will Be Blood was too violent, but the latter film was far more powerful and significant.

9:28 Best Actor, Drama: Daniel Day-Lewis. Not a surprise that we completely agree with this. In our excitement, we missed the name of the next nominator, but he has a wicked sweet mustache--if not quite as good as DDL's.

9:26 Best TV Drama: Grey's Anatomy was nominated? Isn't that more of a weird, camely dramedy with way too much non-disease-transmitting sleeping around and an unbelievable number of failed marriages for one hospital wing? We don't see it in the same category as The Tudors, at least. Anyway, the winner is Mad Men, which is undeniably one of the biggies of the past year. Approval!

9:23 Best Picture (Comedy/Musical): Sweeney Todd. Really? Thought Juno might give it a run for its money. Guess the group liked musicals this year, letting Johnny Depp win for actor too (his first Globe).

9:20 Best TV Actress, Comedy: Tina Fey, 30 Rock. We approve of this wholeheartedly. ("I don’t believe in one-way streets. Not between people, and not while I’m driving.") Best Director: Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Bit of an underdog against the Coen brothers and Ridley Scott, if artsy, but congrats to him for tackling a difficult theme. Best Actor: Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd. Singing gets you somewhere. This presenter has wild ruffles and is welcoming Mary Hart from ET to read more noms.

9:16 Best TV Actor, Comedy: David Duchovny, Californication. Best TV Comedy: Extras (what?). Best Actress (Movie), Julie Christie, Away from Her, kicking Keria's skinny butt. E! is doing a far superior job of showing amusing clips from the nominated shows/actors/movies rather than attempting to rouse their own excitement. So far, what we miss most are the shots of the nominees at the show: expectation, crestfallenness, gloating. Is there a better combo of 3 emotions? Also, we clearly need to up our television-watching ante.

9:13 Okay, now we're trying E!'s coverage, also featuring some nicely dressed tools we don' really recognize (maybe we need to watch more TV). At least E! is doing more "analysis" and less unnecessary hype. Plus, they're actually showing the live press conference and the presents offering support for the writers. Way better than NBC. There are even envelopes to open! No Country for Old Men just won best screenplay.

9:10 Best Supporting Actress, TV: Samantha Morton, Longford. Whomantha Morwhat? We need to do a better job of watching British documentaries on TV. Also, Rachel Griffiths? Way better as Brenda. We're being ordered to log on to NBC.com and participate in their interactive Golden Globes coverage--totally doing it.

9:07 Best Actress, TV Drama: Glenn Close, Damages. Worst image, TV actress: Glenn Close, with face oddly distorted on NBC awards podium.

9:04 K, they're not actually going to show us any part of the press conference, apparently--just have annoying quasi-newscasters announce the results. What could be even lamer than a press conference? Oh, I know--a summary of a press conference! We are so not sticking with this for the whole thing. Best supporting TV actor: Jeremy Piven! As Billy says, "Some characters just break through." Right, Billy. Right.

9:01 Oh, thank god Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell (who!?) have their own golden awards podium for these announcements!

9:00 Thanks to the lack of drama at the (nonexistent) ceremony itself, NBC has turned to hometown heroes (including a group of screamy Canadians from the hometown of precocious Juno--er, Ellen Page) and intercontestant drama, pitching Julia against Saoirse in the actress competition. A dizzying intro montage leaves us nauseous already.

Thank you for mentioning the E! coverage because that NBC display was sad. They really blew through a bunch of minutes trying to pronounce Marion Cotillard's last name.

The season premiere of "Rock of Love" was far more entertaining!
