Bostonist Fashion: Spring Is Brighter, Bolder, and Bigger
Bostonist will be bringing several fashion writers on board in the next few weeks. And now, meet Jocelyn Celeste!
According to the powers that be, men’s wear for women is making a comeback in ‘08. Yes, ladies will be able to start channeling their inner Diane Keaton and dress in the most unfeminine, frumpy clothing ever. Because that’s what all straight guys want--to bone themselves and then fight with their girlfriends over who gets to wear that tweed sports coat in the wardrobe.
On that depressing note – we can only hope spring time is coming sooner than expected. Because when it does, it will be like the rainbow connection. Clothing and accessories next season are going to be bright. Some shoppers will finally break down and buy a pair of red shoes, ignoring their grandmothers who taught them there were only two people who wore red shoes: whores and clowns.
Size Queens will be extremely happy that oversized bags are here to stay. And jumbo clutches appear to be sticking around for another season (check out L.A.M.B. and Jimmy Choo). Finally, every girl can tell her mother those huge clutches the mom has been clinging to since the 80’s (the era of bigger is better!) is a trend she can partake in again. However, some mothers come from the school of if-they-were-around-the first time-it-was-in-fashion – they-shouldn’t-wear-it-the-second-time (*ahem* leggings *ahem*).
On top of bright colors, the patterns are getting bolder, too. From Anna Sui’s signature flower prints to the poppy print dresses Marc Jacobs sent down the catwalk to Betsey Johnson’s electric blue leopard print cardigans, it’s going to be hard not to notice women when it warms up. Anyone who loves attention will jump for joy.

One line you should be on the look out for this Spring/Summer is Just Sweet. That's Jennifer Lopez’s line, but don't hold it against her--she has a great team of designers. This year’s line is going to feature a season of ice-cream colors, plus flashes of skin that still looks cute and retro. Everything from the 60’s, 70’s and those little winter sweaters we all had as kids in the 80’s is being resuscitated.
Of course, none of this throwback to the Reagan years comes without a catch: The attempted revival of the less desirable items. The one thorn in fashion’s side is Michael Kors, who is still trying to make the caftan fashionable. (Why?) Yes, there are a percentage of women who wear them on the beach or if they’re bloated. But is wearing a bright white sheet with black blotches really fashionable? Unless they’re members of Polyphonic Spree or fat Homer Simpson, there’s really no need for it. Although, they might come in handy during all of those summer cookouts: tie them to a tree, and voila! Instant hammock or tent! Maybe they’re not so bad after all?
