Cheap Eats: New England Soup Factory

012108-soup-factory.jpgListen hard enough, and you'll hear it: a slurping noise from the next table over. Loud jazz and the clanking sounds of metal soup pots can't drown it out. Order your own soup, and you'll be making those same slurping noises in no time.

Some people don't think of soup as a meal unto itself. The soups at the New England Soup Factory, however, are rich and filled with diverse ingredients, making them a perfect, hearty meal.

There's always plenty of variety at the New England Soup Factory, which can make choosing only one difficult. Throughout the winter, they offer Chicken Vegetable, Clam and Corn Chowder, Chili Con Carne, Lobster Newburg, Beef Stew, and Chicken Pot Pie daily, plus four other soups from their vast repertoire. They are served with a French or wheat roll for dipping.

The Cheddar Corn Chowder with Bacon and Scallions, one of the daily offerings, was totally fulfilling for only $4.75. The velvety soup hid chunks of potato, corn, scallions, and slices of bacon. While any one of those flavors could have been overpowering, they were balanced perfectly so that they all had their moment to shine.

And what's better when the temperature is toying with single digits than a steaming bowl of Chicken Vegetable, with chunks of fresh veggies and chicken floating in the homemade broth?

The New England Soup Factory, which has locations in Brookline and Newton, also has sandwiches, salads, and fresh-baked desserts for those who still think soup isn't a real meal.
