Worcester's American Sanitary Plumbing Museum has decided to flush itself out of the city, but it's not going into the crapper just yet. The museum will relocate to the more appropriately named Watertown. Worcester might consider this development perfectly potty, but at least the collection is staying in Massachusetts.
The owners of the museum, the Manoogs, are retiring and have donated everything to the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors of Greater Boston, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports.
The Smithsonian wanted the rich, uh, history, but the Manoogs felt the toilets would be happier in the hands of plumbers. While toilet puns are to be expected in this post, the Manoogs should be praised for their appreciation of the toilet. People should be reacquainted with the history of the chamberpot and the outhouse. The iPhone is a mighty cool gadget, but it can't possibly trump the flush toilet in terms of its benefit to humanity.
The museum has been featured in the book Offbeat Museums by Saul Rubin, who lists it right up there with the Liberace Museum.
According to the Telegram and Gazette, the museum will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm through the end of February. So, if you gotta go, you gotta go.
