Project Runway Season 4, Episode 9: Denim Duos
Last week's Project Runway teamwork challenge brought out some drama, and this week continued to spice things up with a field trip to the Port Authority. The designers had to grab as much denim as possible (in the form of Levi's jeans) out of a giant warehouse and use it to create an original design going along with the Levi's spirit. At the start of the show, we weren't really sure what the Levi's spirit was, but boy, did those designers show us.
More about the denim debacles--and drama--of Project Runway Season 4 after the jump!
Ricky has worked with denim before--sometimes he makes his hats out of it. He decided to do something that "no one else could do," making a corset out of denim. Jillian chose to use Levi's labels to make an epaulet on the shoulder of her denim shirt.
Some designers lamented Christian's immaturity, comparing him to a first grader or a cartoon character. He is a little melodramatic, but without his contributions, there'd be even less drama on this more or less remarkably conflict-free season.
Jillian became annoyed that VIctorya decided to make a coat--just like Jillian--especially after they made a coat together in the last challenge. We think the denim jacket is classic enough to render the coat-making a little less than suspicious, but understand the designers' frustration with others doing designs similar to their own.
When Tim Gunn visited the designers mid-process, the boys seemed to be far ahead of the girls--not just in progress, but conceptualization as well. Tim called Ricky's corset "stunning" and even went so far as to say that Rami's piece had the potential to "blow everybody away." Victorya's coat, however, was "looking patchworky," and "It's scaring me" was all Tim had to say about Sweet P's "hippie dippie" denim wedding dress. Time for some changes!
Many of the looks came down to the wire, with Jillian's frustration causing her to cut herself repeatedly (with scissors, we hope) while rushing to finish up, and Christian concentrating so much on his work that he couldn't even talk. Christian? Not talking? That is some real concentration.
On the final day, Chris dissed Victorya's look as "just a jacket with some stuff on it," saying some of the other designers could've made it in two hours. This sentiment would be echoed by the judges later. In reference to all the tight denim dresses, Christian said "If I have to see another tube dress, I'm going to die." He may be a little melodramatic, but props to Christian for creativity--he put together an innovative jacket/jeans combo with the jeans legs made out of jacket sleeves.
Just as she got caught up with Twizzler drama a few weeks ago, Jillian found herself taking it down to the wire with her complicated jacket design this week. As some other designers suggested, perhaps she'd do better to tone down her ambition and make something simple--but finished.
After a relatively snark-free episode, Heidi brought the drama out on the runway: there will be no more immunity for challenge winners. Gasp! Everyone's on the line this time, and each time henceforth. Caroline Calvin, senior VP of design at Levi's, introduced the challenge and served as the guest judge this round. She was very denim, but we're not quite convinced it was stylish denim. Still, she's got more design cred than us, so we paid attention when the woman talked.
Chris created a cute minidress with some funky strappy details, though some parts of it were suspiciously frayed and unfinished. Ricky's look featured a pretty damn hot corset with ruffled skirt and buttons down the front. Sweet P's second draft was another sleeveless dress, with a bit of a patchwork vibe, but far less patchouli than her previous version. Victorya's denim coatdress was acceptable, but nothing amazing--you can find more creativity at H&M. Rami made a tight sleeveless dress with ruffled skirt, zipper accents, and funky flared collar. Christian's jeans looked tres chic, but the jacket was a little short and asymmetrical looking in our eyes. Jillian's coat had a dramatic military collar and buttons, though it made the model appear a little heavy.
Guest judge Caroline Calvin liked Christian's innovative use of jacket sleeves for his jeans, and appreciated that he used all parts of the Levi's 501s. "This item to me looks dated," said Nina of Chris's outfit, and Caroline thought the dress looked like two dresses that hadn't come together yet. Nina called Ricky's highly fitted dress "impeccable" and Michael Kors congratulated him for finally using his lingerie experience to the fullest in a challenge. The judges echoed the contestants' criticisms of Jillian, saying her look was overly complicated. Sweet P's dress had "the slimming voodoo" and was very chic, though not heavy on the 501 vibe. "It looks like a party skirt got glued on to your jean jacket," said Michael of Victorya's look--an accurate assessment, we think.
Jillian's coat used too much material and made the model look "like a marshmallow" according to Heidi. Victorya's outfit looked like she didn't have fun. Chris's outfit was "very Joan Cusack in Working Girl" as Michael put it. This makes us want to do an 80s movie marathon. Stat.
Ricky won the challenge for his super cute (and super tight!) dress, which will be sold through Levi.com. Jillian and Victorya, the coat-makers, were left in the bottom two. Jillian's outfit was criticized as "unflattering, unfocused, and confusing," while Victorya's was "uninspired" and "dull." Victorya was kicked out, and only Christian came to give her a hug as she left! Bad move, other contestants. Even if you don't like someone--even if they call you the wrong name twice (as Victorya did to Kit, er, Sweet P), at least bid 'em adieu. How will you feel if no one gives you a squeeze when you leave?
Next week: another field trip, featuring sex moans, arm wrestling, iridescent fabric, and "foreign territories." Kors says "I feel like the pope at a sex club--I'm just like, 'whoa'" in response to somebody's outfit. How can you not want to see a design like that?
