Yesterday, Bostonist spread the word that the daily paper the Metro is going through a tough time, a fairly standard story as far as journalism is concerned. While comparing the Globe and the Herald's takes on the Metro shakeup, which included staff dismissals and the publisher's resignation, Bostonist noticed a change in tone between the articles.
Boston Daily's Joe Keohane worked his sources at the Metro and found that the Globe may have gotten parts of the story flat-out wrong. You'd think the Globe would have easy access for the story since the New York Times Company, which owns the Globe, has a 49 percent stake in the Metro.
However, the Globe reported that the Gameday Sox section would be discontinued. Au contraire, Keohane's source says. Gameday will go on. Plus, Keohane adds, the paper's problems are the result of a garden-variety business bungle: "According to the source, after a good year in ‘06, the paper went a little crazy with the new hires, and, in light of a tough fourth quarter last year, had to cut costs and eliminate some redundancies to make for better (ick) synergy with the Globe."
The "(ick)" part was Keohane's. But, if synergy is going to happen, the Metro and the Globe might want to talk to each other first.
