Bostonist Fashion: How to Be a Frugal Fashionista

012808-mizrahi-party-dress.jpgWith the change of seasons comes the change of wardrobes. Millions of women all over will be switching over the purses, shoes, and clothes they live in for the next few months. Many of these women will try desperately to look like a million bucks and be the epitome of what Anna Wintour would consider “high fashion.”

But the grim reality of it all is that the vast majority of women out there do not have Anna Wintour's bankroll. Hell, they’d be lucky if they had Tara Reid’s paycheck! Do you know how much it costs to look that? Tens of dollars, probably, and that would explain that amazing boob job and lipo she got back in ’03.

So what do you do if you’re a Susie Q Public, barely scraping by on 30+K a year? The Bull’s-eye is there to help! A lot of designers are finally figuring out they’ll make more money selling in major outlets at half the cost; it gets their name out, and then they’re labeled innovators and become the darlings of Bryant Park.

It worked for Isaac. Isaac was pretty much on the verge of going broke in 1998 and in 2003 signed with Target to do a collection of affordable ready-to-wear clothing for women. The line was a major success, which led him to do a line of home accessories and then a line of pet accessories (Because who doesn’t want to walk their dog in a leopard-print doggie sweater and matching rhinestone collar?). And now, Mizrahi is back to being a leader in the fashion world and soon will be leaving Target and getting behind the wheel at Liz Claiborne. You can find a similar line made by Vera Wang for Kohl’s. Everyone’s favorite bridal designer can be found hawking everything from bras to belts to blouses to bags to bedding. Hopefully the supposed curse of her bridal gowns hasn’t tainted her clothing and accessories line.

Now some would think that the only major “designers” at these stores would be Kathie Lee Gifford (hey, those ponies that Cody & Cassidy wanted back in the day didn’t buy themselves) and Jaclyn Smith (Charlie’s most fashionable angel). But instead, designers like Luella Bartley, Behnaz Sarafpour, Alice Temperley, and duos such as Libertine & Proenza Schouler have participated in Target’s GO International campaign (Sarafpour, Libertine, and Proenza were all featured in the documentary “Seamless,” where they were all competing for the CFDA Emerging Artist Award). The collections are in the stores for about 90 days, and they fly off the racks in about 5. You might be still able to find some of the pieces on eBay.

Erin Fetherston is the latest designer to join the ranks. Her little dresses would look great this Valentine's and could be worn during the spring, too. If you’re less daring than some and don’t want to be that vulnerable, throw a pair of jeans underneath and you have the perfect shopping/casual Friday outfit. By the way, the next team to release a collection this March will be Milla Jovovich and her partner, Carmen Hawk. So if you’re looking for cute vintage clothes in some great prints, you’re in luck!

Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld, and Roberto Cavalli hopped on the bandwagon by doing collections for H&M. H&M also sold a swimwear line from Kylie Minogue and tracksuits from Madonna. The European-based store has been at the forefront of affordable fashion and fits in perfectly on Newbury Street in between Valentino and Marc Jacobs. But then again, much like the music scene, Europe is always ahead of the ball game. In the UK, Top Shop has three locations in London alone and can be found throughout Europe. Kate Moss introduced her line there – which can be now found in Barneys, for a high price. And if you like what you see on Top Shop’s website – they do ship to the US, so break out the currency converters.

The latest to join the ranks is Zara, the Spain-based retailer, which is coming to Boston. They feature clothing similar to H&M and will be taking over two locations in Boston. If you don’t feel like dealing with the fashionistas on Newbury or foot traffic jams Downtown, you’ll be able to find Zara at the Collection in Natick. On the South Shore, Steve & Barry’s reign supreme. The chain which makes affordable clothing and carries Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten line, which features pieces every woman should have under 20 bucks. Meanwhile Amanda Bynes has her Dear line for juniors, which includes fashion basics everyone should have and won’t break their parents' banks.

At the end of the day, we all partake in some trends, but why risk going broke all in means of fashion?

It’s like when those graffiti Louis Vuitton bags became the “it” bag. Do you really want to spend a couple grand on something you’re more than likely going to use for a season? So shopping at places like H&M is a cost efficient alternative to say Neiman Marcus. The trick is to get something you know is going to stand the test of time and if you get it at a good price, even better! As for trends, there’s a reason they’re only around for 15 minutes. If they weren't, we’d still be walking around looking like the defense line of the Patriots thanks to shoulder pads.
