Herald Vs. Globe Super Bowl Book Brawl

013008-book-cover.jpgOur two local papers enjoyed a Super Bowl-scale brawl yesterday when the Track Girls chided the Globe for selling a book on the Patriots' undefeated season. As if it's a crime. Bostonist loves the Track Girls, but how do they think teams get their championship T-shirts and caps so quickly? A wizard waving a wand? People print them beforehand, just like they print books beforehand, and the Globe had the foresight to get ready for a Patriots victory. If the Giants won (not gonna happen--right?), then the Globe could destroy it and make it a tax write-off.

The Track Girls turned it into an issue, crowing that the Globe's book was available for pre-order on Amazon and implying that the Globe was playing the jinx. This made the Globe angry. While the Globe is owned by the Gray Lady, you don't want to make the Globe angry. Carol Beggy and Mark Shanahan promptly turned out an article declaring that the Herald had already printed its own book about the Patriots' undefeated season. The response the Herald gave Beggy and Shanahan was awkward, to say the least:

"The distinction between the Herald's book and the Globe's book," Herald spokeswoman Gwen Gage wrote us in an e-mail, "is that we instructed the publisher not to market our book as authored by the Boston Herald until the Patriots win the Super Bowl."

Picky, picky. You printed it, didn't you?

While this Bostonist doesn't believe in jinxes (the Pats are good, what's there to worry about?), this catfight among papers is highly entertaining, but this kind of sniping makes us wish the Super Bowl would hurry up and start already.

Image of a book on Amazon going by the title "New York Giants: 2008 Super Bowl Champions." Dream on. And note the purposely vague cover.
