Sports Redux: Madcap Media

1457689619_74fc5ababe_m.jpgSuper Bowl Media Day is the professional football equivalent of the annual family reunion. A bunch of people get together, often traveling long distances, for the purpose of catching up. There's little that they have in common, but since they sort of fall under the same name, everyone has to make nice. The hijinks on display makes for a hilarious time for those not directly involved. People make nice and dumb down the stories of what they do and who they are in order to appease the extended family, and the whole thing would be much more enjoyable for all involved if alcohol was part of the equation. Someone (or, rather, many someones) wind up doing something dumb that seemed like a really good idea at the time, but is really foolish in retrospect.

(Wedding Dress Reporter Lady, we're talking to you.)

Media Day for Super Bowl XLII came and went in sunny Glendale on Tuesday, and it was as chaotic as ever. As Dan Shaugnessy pointed out (indirectly trying, we think, to show us that he's not the most insufferable member of the media team for once), Miss Nevada was busy asking Tom Brady about the number of marriage proposals he's received. Boston.com's Chris Forsberg set us giggling with the recap of how Richard Seymour made bet loser Ellis Hobbs do pushups while proclaiming his love of Georgia (hehehehe). Practice players were seen dancing with television anchors, questions about fashion and pop culture were flying about, and our dear Tedy Bruschi was getting no love (blasphemy!).

Back home, everybody's busy jinxing the Pats. Mayor Tom Menino mentioned the R words and then probably wished he could take those four syllables right back. The Boston Globe's book on the Pats season - you know, the one not even finished yet - was available for pre-order on Amazon on Tuesday (thankfully, the page was taken down).

And to think - it's just going to get crazier before Sunday.

The Bruins hosted Nashville on Tuesday night for what turned into a thriller of a game. We were going to say that the 3-1 Boston victory was a much closer game than the score indicated. But then we remembered how the Bruins No. 1 line was pounding Nashville goalie Chris Mason with shots early the game. That's when we started to think about how Bruins goalie Tim Thomas was left to come up with more mind-staggering saves (37 total) from an equally intense Nashville offence. And it was around that time that we cheered again as we remembered the way Thomas pounded on Nashville's J.P. Dumont when the Predator flew into our goalie during the second period.

Simply put, it was a hell of a game, and Glen Metropolit's two goals made sure that it was a hell of a Bruins victory.

Down in Florida, where the presidential primary puns flowed freely from the minds and fingertips of sports journos, the Celts crushed the Heat. Leon Powe stepped up with a career-high 25 point effort when the Celts faced a game without Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. As Heat coach Pat Riley put it, Boston "pretty much had their way with us here."

Leon finally getting his moment in the sunshine!

25, dang. That goes to show that, after last season, maybe the company one keeps on the team truly counts.
