Bostonist Fashion: In the Presence of Posh
Victoria Beckham is a style icon with Hermes bag collection that would make most women green with envy. It’s also fitting that she would make an appearance on Wednesday promoting her jeans & sunglasses collection right before her other gig that night. For those of you who don’t know, she sometimes sings with this pop group from the UK, ever hear of them? Spice something?
Some people know her as the one who doesn’t sing in the pop group mentioned above or the surly pouting skinny bitch seen in the tabloids or as an alien (thank you, Perez Hilton). But in actuality, she’s a fashion maven with growing cache of money-making goods. Beckham, also known as "Posh," is so much more than a pretty face; she’s a fashion entrepreneur.
Her career in fashion started after meeting Rock & Republic’s head designer, Michael Ball, during Fashion Week ’04 in LA. The two hit it off and she launched her VB Rocks jeans line exclusively for Rock & Republic. In the last few years, Beckham left Rock & Republic and has struck out on her own. Under the moniker DVB you can find everything from sunglasses, jeans, and perfume. In Japan, she’s done a line of handbags and jewelry for Samantha Thavasa and recently announced that she would be doing a line of cosmetics there under the name V-Sculpt.
Her jean line is sold exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue, which is where she was on Wednesday. If you ever wanted to get a person from each demo you find in Boston, the Victoria Beckham appearance was the ideal locale. Everyone from future cast members of "My Super Sweet Sixteen," to scenesters, to Ya Dudes, to Drag Queens, to the girl next door and her boyfriend rocking a Sox cap and Patriots jersey were there. Someone even brought her newborn baby to meet the Posh one, and a class from BU decided to make a field trip out of it.
When polled, the general population waiting in line to see Ms. Beckham gushed about her style, their love for her music, and their love for her husband. All of the girls wanted to be her, and, well, a lot of the guys did, too. She greeted all of the people who attended with her signature pout, and she took a moment in between fans to pop her collar and to make sure not a hair was out of place and the gloss was perfect. The high point for the author of this piece was seeing Victoria Beckham smile. Yes, Victoria Beckham smiled. Unfortunately, much like most Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot sightings, the camera decided not to capture this rarity. Probably better off--don’t want to tarnish her image, do we?
Post contributed by Jocelyn Celeste. More on how Posh got to be the fashionista she is and another picture after the jump!
So, how did a pop singer turn into such a style icon? For starters, she was exclusively dressed by Roberto Cavalli. Every appearance or party, she wore one of his original creations. Can you imagine that conversation?
“Yeah, Hi, Bob. So I’ve got this party I have to go to. Can you whip something up for me? Majah, thanks! Ciao!”
Also, in 2006, Harper's Bazaar decided to take her on as a guest Fashion Editor, and she transformed Katie Holmes from WB Teenage Mellow Drama Star to Armani-wearing Xenu worshiping fashionista. Perhaps Ms. Holmes read Victoria’s book, The Extra Half an Inch – Hair, Heels & Everything In Between, which is a how-to book that covers everything from how to make the most of your wardrobe to how to feel confident every day you leave the house.
But she can still make fun of herself. Her ads for Marc Jacobs are amusing to say the least. You think Madonna or Kate Moss would be pictured in Marc Jacobs bag looking like an alien or being eaten by a bag, with only her legs sticking out showing off his new line of shoes? She will also be the face--well, body--of his skin cancer awareness campaign t-shirts.
Victoria Beckham is like a real-life Barbie. And granted no wants to want to admit it, but what girl didn’t want to be like Barbie when she was little? Everything seems perfect, from her wardrobe to the way she struts down the catwalk to her marriage and family. She leads a good life, isn’t that what all women strive for? Who doesn’t want to have it all and look perfect while doing it?
Now with that said, would it kill her to smile occasionally?

So Posh doesn't sing and David Beckham doesn't play soccer? Good gigs.
