The Rumble Over City Hall

013008-city-hall.jpgThe fight over the mayor's pet project of moving City Hall to South Boston is about to fire up again. Mayor Menino has been dreaming of escaping the concrete confines of the current City Hall and its depressing plaza. Hence, the City Council is putting up a fight by launching an exploratory committee. (That's how American politicians do things--they don't get into a fistfight. They form opposing committees.)

Menino would like to give the whole place the heave, but there's a few problems, not to mention the expense and the problems of relying on the Silver Line to get citizens out to South Boston.

The latest scuffle over relocating City Hall is especially intriguing because City Councilor Michael Flaherty is heading up that committee, and he's been considered a potential opponent to "eternal mayor" Menino. According to Donovan Slack's sources, the mayor considers Flaherty's leadership a "personal attack."

While the City Council hashes this matter out, Bostonist would like to remind the mayor that creative architects have whipped up plans that would improve that whole part of the city without forcing a relocation of City Hall.

That building is a symbol of innovation, technology, strength, and permanence. It fits Boston well. I'd be proud to work in it every day. Maybe Boston needs a new mayor instead of a new city hall?

Again, the Mayor is projecting, presuming that others are doing what he would do if he were in their position. Flaherty doing his job is now a "personal attack"? Does Menino want to be Mayor or Maharaja?
