Saturday Happenings
Bookgasms
There is no public institution that inspires Bostonist with so many warm feelings as the public library. And there is no charity event quite like a library book sale to make Bostonist into a heartless marauder, fighting tooth and nail with no quarter given nor expected. City-wide Friends of the BPL are offering one today at Copley. Stay out of our freaking way. Central Library, Copley Square, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.
Movies
It's the second night of HFA's Arthur Penn retrospective, and it's the night Bostonist recommends. "Get him before he dies!" the 85 year-old director recently quipped in the Boston Globe. 'Nuff said. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7:00 pm. $10.
--Learn more about the history and present day status of Africa by watching films from the 8th annual Boston African Film Festival. Featuring works from Cameroon, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and many other countries, this festival provides a unique glimpse into other cultures. Several movies will be screening today. Get the full rundown. MFA, $6-9.
Tush-Defrosting
Boston has been so cold lately that most of us don't remember how it feels to have a fully-functioning circulatory system. Here's a sure cure for the frozen appendage thing: The Milky Way's famous, never-fail fun time that is Mango's Latin Dance Night. Show up at 9 for salsa lessons, then stick around for a Latin dance party featuring DJs Baby Boricua and Lee Wilson. Free for the ladies before 10:30 PM, and only $10 for the fellas. Bring a dance partner or meet one there!
Rick Sawyer, Vidalia Shiraz, and Kerry Skemp contributed to this post. Image of Night Moves, screening at the HFA tonight, from Amazon.
