Cheap Eats: The Publick House

020408-publick-house-brookline.JPGThe Publick House is known primarily for its beers – a selection of Belgian brews too vast to enumerate. The food menu is not quite as long, but there are some fantastic eats to go along with the great drinks.

The Veggie Burger is the top cheap eat pick at $9. The burger is actually made of vegetables – a rarity in the land of veggie burgers. It’s packed with peas, carrots and zucchini, a slightly more virtuous choice to go along with all that beer. The exterior of the burger is crispy and slightly charred, while the interior is soft and naturally sweet from the vegetables. The plate is finished with a pickle and a mound of thick, crispy frites, best doused liberally with vinegar.

For the less virtuous, the Mac and Cheese is the way to go. The dish starts at $10, and add-ons such as scallops, caramelized onions, or fancier cheeses are extra. But even the plain mac and cheese is delicious. The dish is made with orecchiette (little ears) instead of macaroni, and the cheesy goodness gathers in the small wells of the pasta. The top crust is the best part, as it gets crispy in the oven as the dish bakes. This is a big meal, and you need to be very hungry to finish it off. Otherwise, it’s perfect for lunch the next day.

The Publick House is located on Beacon Street in Washington Square in Brookline. They are open 5pm-2am Monday through Friday and 4pm-2am Saturday and Sunday.

Love, love, love the Publick House! http://www.DrinksAreOnMe.net

Just watch out if you go on trivia night. They will kick you out of your seats!
Their food profit must be significantly higher than their alcohol profit.
