Wednesday Happenings

Music
Few acts in hip-hop's young guard come more correct than Berkeley, CA crew The Pack. Roiling, minimalist beats, raps about partying and sneakers, and a whispered menace that keeps you off guard: it's like degree zero of the art form. Sounds great on record (or Myspace), but can they rock an audience? Harper's Ferry, 158 Brighton Ave., Allston, 7:00 pm, $12/$14.
Could your music options for tonight be any different? "Lady rapper" Leslie of Leslie and the LYs looks amazing and admitted to DCist: "Seriously, these shows are all about the gold suits." She could probably rap "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and the suits would hold the audience in thrall. Middle East Upstairs, $9.
Humor, of a Sort
Paris Hilton gets "honored" by the Harvard Lampoon outside the Lampoon Castle at 1:00 pm. Then, that night, she'll be at The Estate, which opens its doors at 8:00 pm. Since The Estate just had Brody Jenner, is that place turning into a petting zoo, or what?
Books
Harvard Book Store sponsors a panel discussion with psychologist Steven Pinker, poet Robert Pinsky, novelist Leslie Epstein, and poet/critic Maureen McLane, moderated by David Mehegan from the Globe. Affiliated with he "Best Recommended," a National Book Critics Circle Project that recommends books based on quality rather than sales. Panelists will discuss February's Best Recommended lists, their favorite book recommenders, what gives anyone the authority to recommend, and the worst book recommendations they've heard. This event will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the Brattle Theatre. Tickets for the event are $5 and can be purchased at Harvard Book Store or by phone (617-661-1515).
