I think this is a lesson you're ignorant, simple mind needs to get a hold of.

to paraphrase the BPD: leaving a glaring grammatical error in a sentence where you insult somebody's intelligence is NEVER A GOOD IDEA.

I dont think reading is "banal" dreary and predictable. In fact, I am always impressed when I hear that ppl read, I don't think of them as "banal"!!

Ms. D,

Is there a reason why you're so miserable and feel you must make the general public miserable too? What works for one person, may not work for another - but just because it makes them happy, doesn't make them a bad person.

I think this is a lesson you're ignorant, simple mind needs to get a hold of. You complain about the money situation, but the author said to be smart and safe in the final paragraph. That's doesn't necessarily mean just be smart and safe when it comes to sex. An intelligent person would use those two words when it comes to the world of finances and also, the author mentions getting together with a group a friends....something you mentioned later on, did you even really read the article?

It's ok if you don't understand something, it's ok to ask questions. And if for some reason you're in a bad place in your life right now - I get it, but lighten up. Going thru life miserable isn't good for your complexion and make the vast majority of people out there not want to be with you.

Happy Valentines Day.

Oy.

I was GOING to suggest that the lovelorn might find solace in such banal activities as READING A BOOK, or in some way finding fun in a new, and perchance, exotic outing alone or with friends.

But I have gotten the message. As there is no nearby Walmart in which to spree my hardly earned bux, I guess I will now spend the evening fostering my own self-esteem getting high off the acetone fumes from the nail polish remover while I perform my mandated self-esteem building beauty ritual of adorning my fingers and toes with brain-cell killing chemicals, bought for a song, I tell you! A song!

Perhaps I will also enjoy a Kool-Aid cocktail-- you know, the kind those nice people keep inviting me to try?

I haven't been single on Valentine's Day for a long time, but I gotta say, if I were to be, I would definitely do something like this. You're not saying that single women should go out on a shopping spree to put themselves in debt, you're giving options other than sitting around moping all day just because it is a romantic holiday that they can't celebrate WITH someone... and I think that's fantastic. Granted, those with limited funds would have to do this in a different way, e.g., spree at a Walmart or buy your own mani/pedi kit and do it themselves. (And of course the women who "don't care" about Valentine's Day can just treat it as any other day and not have to think about it at all.) But for the women who are newly single or even those who have been single for a long time who might get a little down about seeing couples doting on eachother everywhere they go on February 14th, this is a great alternative. Making yourself feel pretty (at ANY cost or no cost at all) at any time of year makes a huge difference in your mood and self-esteem, so why shouldn't a woman who is feeling grumpy next Thursday do something to brighten their mood??
Great article, Jocelyn, I am sure there are many single women who can read this article, modify it to their budget/beliefs and really enjoy Valentine's Day without having to feel lonesome! :)

You can shop and be smart, some people like to shop at Needless Mark-Up others Walmart.

For women who are supposedly not interested in Valentines, you all are making a big deal about it...

Everyone is different, what makes one person happy - may not work another, but you don't need to be rude about it.

"Whenever I have a boyfriend, I insist that we don't celebrate it because it's a silly manufactured holiday."

I like the underlying concept of Valentine's day. The history is interesting. Apparently Chaucer's *Parlement of Foules* was the first written record of Valentine's Day associated specifically with romantic love. Other legends involve religious martyrdom and notes to offer prayer for the sick or imprisoned.

Depressing that this consumer-driven society demotes most holidays into another self-indulgent utilitarian fete. If you are single and you celebrate this holiday, you should probably donate to the Red Cross, and call your parents and/ siblings. After that, do yourself a favor: go to a yoga session, watch a few more episodes of your roommate's complete collection of the *West Wing* or *Due South*, AND make it a priority finish that darned essay for your class but have been procrastinating on for the last few months after telling your Professor that grandma died (for the 5th time since she has 9 lives). Save the gold bullion for rent -- especially if you live that chic area. Getting yourself in debt as a result of low self-esteem is just as bad as a horrible hangover.

I agree, Aunti D.

I am a single woman who does not care about Valentine's Day. It's the most worthless of holidays, I have always thought so, boyfriend or not. Whenever I have a boyfriend, I insist that we don't celebrate it because it's a silly manufactured holiday. I don't need to validate my worth on February 14th, and I certainly wouldnt need money of all things to validate my worth.

Call my righteous, oh well.

Yeah. Thanks for that.

Nothing says "Confidence" like a major retail therapy binge. Keep buying kids, it's Valentine's Day! If you've got love, spend. If you don't, spend anyway to compensate. Just as long as you keep that Consumer Confidence up, up, up!
