--The State Supreme Judicial Court just overturned the conviction of a Methuen ex-police officer accused of raping a woman in 2000. The case hinged on whether or not lawyers could prove the woman was "too intoxicated to consent, not that she was merely high and drunk." However, the SJC felt that the trial judge didn't give proper instructions to the jurors. The ex-officer will get a new trial. [Boston Globe]
--In a similar case, the SJC declared that a former Harvard dental student who was convicted of raping another student should also have a new trial. Likewise, the SJC felt the original judge didn't explain the "high standard required to show that someone is too intoxicated to consent to sex." [AP/Boston Globe]
--An Arizona man is claiming that he almost killed a bunch of people at the Super Bowl. He had been denied a liquor license in Tempe, allegedly flipped out, sent notes to the news media saying he was going to do something, and eventually came to his senses. Looks like he won't be getting that license now. [WBZ]
