Saturday Happenings

Music
Funny, they don't look bloodthirsty. Vampire Weekend's sound could be described as "My First Afro Pop." They merge indie sounds with world music, and the critics are falling in love. The Village Voice called them "goofy"--it was a compliment. MFA, Remis Auditorium, 8:00 pm, $15. Why do we post this since it looks like it is nearly impossible to get tickets? So you can share hot ticket tips in the comments. Keep an eye out for a review.

Movies
Documentary Today the Hawk Takes One Chick will have its world premiere at the ICA. Local filmmaker Jane Gillooly followed three grandmothers in Swaziland who are struggling to maintain their families and their communities in the face of the African HIV crisis. A Q&A will follow the screening. Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater, $10.

Hell on Wheels
The Boston Derby Dames host their February bout tonight as Cosmonaughties face off against Wicked Pissahs. Hardcore country band Slim Jim and the Madcows provide the soundtrack. The venue is way the hell out there, so find yourself a carpool. Shriner's Auditorium, Wilmington, 5:00 pm, $14/$16.
