Gary Vaynerchuk Brings The Thunder To Boston
Gary Vaynerchuk has a message for Bay Staters: Rise up against your oppressors.
He says it’s a “sad state of affairs” that the place that hosted the Boston Tea Party allows itself to fall victim to “archaic wine shipping laws.”
Vaynerchuk, the 30-something host of the wildly popular Wine Library TV podcast – “the Internet’s most passionate wine program” – says that “a few special interest groups have shut things down” and not allowed wine shipments into Massachusetts.
Bostonist caught up with Vaynerchuk, the director of operations for Springfield, NJ-based Wine Library, at the recent Boston Wine Expo where his booth included sexy models handing out “schwag packs” containing a wrist band, corkscrew, and best-of podcast DVD.
Vaynerchuk’s self-proclaimed mission is to “change the wine world.” He offered advice on learning more about wine. Books and magazines are fine, he says, but Google and Wikipedia are your best online resources. “There’s no need to nerd it up,” he cautions. Instead, he suggests getting friends involved to start a tasting group. He warned not to let yourself be intimidated by the breadth of knowledge related to wine. “Fuck that,” he said bluntly.
His language is already a source of controversy. Ever the iconoclast, you won’t find Vaynerchuk’s descriptions in any stuffy wine industry publication. He says things like, “This wine smells exactly like a Strawberry Shortcake scratch-n-sniff from the 1980s” or “This wine smells just like Skittles” much to the delight of his fans.
Natalie Pilon, a Littleton, MA-based "Vayniac" says Vaynerchuk's descriptions have altered her wine approach. She said she's no longer afraid to call 'em as she smells 'em. "If a wine smells like Elmer's glue to me I say it smells like Elmer's glue," she said. "WLTV is a great way to learn about wine and expand your palette," she continued.
Vaynerchuk’s words are heard by more than 60,000 viewers every work day. In addition, he’s become an in-demand Internet conference speaker. His calendar is already loaded with upcoming speaking engagements at South By Southwest, Future Of Web Apps, and an upcoming May tour with members of the Food Network during the Great American Food Festival. He also revealed that he has a book coming out. Will it sell? "Legacy is better than currency!" he mused.
