Friday Happenings

021508-gibby-haynes.JPGManchildren
Founder of K Records and former member of Beat Happening, Calvin Johnson mastered precious naivete decades before it became the default indie mode. His off-kilter baritone is what sold it, and he's bringing his voice and an acoustic guitar to Cambridge tonight. Teenbeat Records founder Mark Robinson also performs as Cotton Candy. Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Square, 7:00pm, $10.

Men With Children
Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers is returning to town with a new backing band--teenagers. These brave young folk hanging with Haynes are the School of Rock All-Stars. Haynes might be considerably scarier than Jack Black's cuddly rock instructor, but at least these students are learning from a master. The Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, 9:00, $15.

Sex Work Cabaret
Some might argue that all art is prostitution, but that metaphor loses its poignancy tonight. The Sex Workers' Art Show is a variety-style showcase featuring burlesque, spoken word, music, performance art, and, naturally, porn made and curated by members of the world's oldest profession. Sure to stimulate. Coolidge Corner Theatre, Brookline, midnight (Saturday), $10.

Famous People Sightings
If you're wondering why you're hearing the words "more cowbell!" all over Cambridge, Christopher Walken is getting roasted as Hasty Pudding's Man of the Year.

Music
Feel good pop/folk/country group The Pat McGee Band plays a show to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy of MetroBoston tonight with guests Adam Ezra Band, Christie Leigh and The Crooked Hearts, and Jay Leonard. Harper's Ferry, Allston, 8:00 PM, $10 advance/$12 door.

Theatre
Bad Habit Productions will taking on David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow, the playwright's skewering look at the Hollywood machine. Be ready for sharp barbs and rapid-fire banter during the show, which opens at 8 p.m. tonight at the Factory Theatre at the Piano Factory. 8:00 PM, $12, ticket information.
