--The ultimate sci-fi slumber party will happen with the 33rd Annual Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival, where this year's theme is "The Future is Passe," and the main event is a screening of A Boy and His Dog, starring Don Johnson. Get more details. Somerville Theatre, Davis Square, 12:00 noon, running through 12:00 noon the next day.
Trannies take the stage for Traniwreck, Boston's only all-gender, all-genre burlesque variety show. Expect comedy, ruckus, and tons of gayness. An event so bizarre that Bay Windows calls it Boston's "most surreal." Milky Way, 405 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, 8:30 pm. $8 (21+ only)
Happy New Year!
Chinatown will kick off the Year of the Rat between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. Get details from Chinatown Main Street. The Boston Photo Mob will also gather to take pictures.

Darkbuster's 3rd Annual Hometown Throwup (no, not a throwdown--a throwup!) starts tonight at Harper's Ferry with Pinkerton Thugs, Three Sheets, and The Throwaways. 9:00 pm, $10. Watch Bostonist this afternoon for a description of the origins of the Throwup and a list of all the shows that will happen this week.
