Sci-fi flick Jumper was number-one at the box office this weekend, but the real story was the disappointing turnout for Definitely, Maybe, which was supposed to be a romantic comedy. Was it the annoying title? Maybe they should have referred to an old '80s TV show and called it My Three Moms instead.
Maybe moviegoers aren't feeling Ryan Reynolds. Ty Burr blew kisses at Maybe co-star Isla Fisher, but he blew a raspberry at Reynolds: "There's something missing from the actor, though, some wrinkle of uniqueness or eccentricity, as though he'd come out of the factory not entirely finished." Brooke Holgerson at the Phoenix sums him up as "agonizingly boring."
Otherwise, the studios positioned movies perfectly: A sci-fi flick, something for the teens (Step Up 2), and something for the kids (Spiderwick Chronicles). Lately, the kids movies are pap, but the Weekly Dig's Josh Elmets gave Spiderwick some credit for successfully blending reality with fantasy. Jumper, despite its moneymaking skills, was the worst of the batch. Brett Michel of the Phoenix felt that Hayden Christensen, as the hero, was an annoying "little shit."
On the bright side, the Oscars will happen on Sunday, February 24. Prepare by going to I Drink Your Milkshake or buying an Anton Chigurh fright wig.
