Hating on Belichick Continues

From satire by the Upright Citizens Brigade (see video above) to Bob Ryan to editorials in the Boston Globe magazine, the media appears to be wailing on Patriots coach Bill Belichick after Spygate and the Super Bowl loss.

So he lost, and so he might be a cheater, but would people be as angry if the Patriots won the Super Bowl? Maybe not. Doug Most writes in the Boston Globe Magazine, "But now it's been three years since [Belichick's] last championship, and, the Spygate scandal aside, his sourpuss act is starting to feel like the nauseating will-they-or-won't-they bedroom drama between Sam and Diane [from the TV show "Cheers"]."

Then Most compares Belichick to a potential Rick Pitino. That's much lower than comparing Belichick to "Cheers" in the Long-Danson Era. The comparisons to losing coaches who have breezed through Boston and old TV shows don't work. Belichick won--a lot. Perhaps a better idea would be to compare Bill Belichick to former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, once praised for setting home-run records but at the same time vilified for being a cheater and a bit of a douchebag. Bonds and Belichick come from the same School of Crankypants. They aren't friendly to the media, and Bostonist admits that neither one would be fun to hang out with, but they were lovable at some point in time because they were winning.

More important, they have never, ever been boring. In this Bostonist's book, a public entertainment figure has a choice--be the nice guy, or be the bad guy, but don't be boring. If you're boring, it means you aren't doing your job. And, with one notable, glaring exception, Bill Belichick has done exactly what sports fans--and the press--wanted him to do. Belichick could take the hint and stop shoving photographers, but otherwise all the media commentary will fall on deaf ears, and he'll return next season, more pissed off and ready to win than ever.

All that said, the UCB video is pretty funny. "Active cut," indeed!

Rory and Craig are in no danger of winding up on SNL. Unfortunately, given the average American IQ, they will probably wind up rich, which is what they really want anyhow.
