Wednesday Happenings
Daft Punk's Electroma
Gus Van Sant, Isaac Asimov, and a French-loving raver walk into the desert... Not a joke, but the vibe of Daft Punk's art-house film debut that debuted at Cannes in '06. In what could either be called a long-form music video or a 74-minute silent movie, it's a beautifully-filmed story that touches on some classic human themes, but in a really twisted way starring robots. (It better have been filmed beautifully too -- one of the dance duo read 200 back issues of American Cinematographer magazine before filming.) Not yet available on DVD in U.S., this is the Boston-area premiere. The Brattle Theatre, 8:00 pm, $12.
"In the Eye of the Beholder: Amorous Encounters at the MFA" is a gallery talk on depictions of affection throughout the history of art and the MFA's collections. Museum of Fine Arts, 6:00 pm, free with museum admission ("No previous experience with love or its imagery required").
More Music on Film
Shhh ... are those the sounds of panty model Gisele Bunchen's home? Get a double dose of Brazilian music with two documentaries screening at the MFA tonight. First is Moro no Brasil: The Sound of Brazil, which covers the many styles of Brazilian music, at 6:15, followed by The Sound of Rio: Brasilierinho at 8:15, which focuses on Trio Madeira Brasil. Single tickets are $9, and both movies cost $15.
Books
Writer Martha Frankel reads from Hats and Eyeglasses: A Family Love Affair with Gambling at 7 p.m. at the Harvard Coop. Bostonist liked the book, even if it did make us want to run out and gamble away our (already small) paychecks.
Rob Vassegh and Kerry Skemp contributed to this post. Promotional poster from the Electroma mySpace page.
The listed events were chosen by the editors of Bostonist and brought to you by the 2009 Toyota Corolla.
