Turns out Green Line service is down between Government Center and Lechmere. Here's the T Alert that was sent out:
Green Line - Due to a wire problem at North Station. A substitute bus shuttle is operating between Government Center and Lechmere making all local stops. Passengers should utilize Orange Line service to make connections for Haymarket, North Station or Back Bay (for Copley area). Please allow extra time for your commute. 2/28/2008 11:01 AM

Regarding the vague "wire problem" mentioned in the post, the MBTA has released a few details. WHDH reports, "MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said a section of overhead wire, which provides electricity to trains, had come down while a train entered the station. All passengers were evacuated."
Fox 25 adds that smoke was seen at the site. Please add anything you saw regarding the episode in the comments.

looks like it may be going up to lechmere by now, but not to heath street... the green line is full of problems today!

I was there when this happened today.
It was like a bomb going off. Several tremendous BOOMS and BANGS and very bright white and blue flashing.
Several people walking into the station went running back the way they came. Quite a few people were under the impression a bomb went off or that some explosion occurred.
T workers were very unorganized, as usual. When the next orange line arrived, no one stopped the commuters coming off the orange line from walking towards the disabled train until at the last seconds the T workers started screaming "get away from there!".
Fun.
i missed the green line bit, but this same day i got off the orange line at wellington to find the place crawling with cops [police dogs in tow]. everyone trying to board the train had to first stop at a table and have their bags and things searched by police. i've been searching and searching for mention of the incident anywhere online, to no avail. anyone see this or know what it was about? think it was related to the green line situation?
