Project Runway Season 4, Episode 13: Almost at Bryant Park!
Last week brought the drama: Chris and Rami are going to have to compete (again!) for a spot on the runway at Fashion Week in NYC. Whoa! As Rami puts it, "Once we thought the rollercoaster was over, there was still another loop." And it's a killer!
After giving the contestants 3.5 months to work, Tim Gunn visits the contestants. "Talk about make it work," says Tim Gunn in response to seeing Christian's tiny closet space in New York. We learn that Christian started working in a hair salon when he was 13, which jump-started his fashion career. He's made a "romantic-gothic" collection where each look is really strong. Tim finds the collection pretty intense, and says Christian may need to know where to stop. His feathery finale pants "look a little costumey," which worries Tim, who tells Christian to use "an editing eye" in finishing his collection.
Jillian also works in NYC, but has a non-closet studio space (not to mention a wicked awesome Christmas stocking on the inside of her apartment door!). "This is really compelling" is Tim's first comment in response to seeing Jillian's collection. Jillian has researched 15th century armor, which inspired her structured but feminine looks. Tim likes the intricate detail of Jillian's work, but says "I feel as though your palette is a cloudy day," suggesting she might want to add brighter colors. Jillian then takes Tim to visit her family on Long Island. All the while, she's wearing shorts, tights, and a hideous holiday sweater--probably the worst thing any contestant has worn all season.
But enough about the kids who are already in--what about those whose heads might still roll? Rami and Chris's collections, after the jump!
Christian meets Rami's friends, and Rami finds it weird to see Tim in a different context. It turns out Rami's mother was Miss Jordan in the 1960s and opened his eyes to fashion, though she died when he was young. His family always knew he'd want to be a designer, even though he tried to keep it secret for some time due to his fears about being creative in the Arab world.
Rami has a huge studio/store with his name on it--a far cry from Christian's closet. Inspired by Joan of Arc, Rami's collection modernizes her fighting gear. Everyone's collections seem to be very structured and capey, a little different from normal fashion but remarkably similar to each other. Tim finds the collection a bit too heavy--literally. Rami might need to lighten things up.
"Beauty with a quirk: 95% fashion and 5% costume" is how Chris describes his collection. Chris used human hair (srsly!) as the trim for some of his garments, which triggers Tim's gag reflex. "When you first enter into the monkey house, you think this place stinks... after you're there for an hour it doesn't smell." Tim says Chris has been living in the monkey house and has lost his perspective. Tim advises Chris to have the judges begging for more--though hair might have them begging for less. Tim meets some of Chris' friends at friend Larry's apartment, which Chris describes as "a big baroque rococo nightmare," which proves to be a pretty accurate assessment. Still, the group has fun, and Chris reveals a little about his background, including that he's the youngest of 5 brothers, none of whom seem to support his fashion habit.
Chris and Rami get to choose partners (Jillian or Christian) to help them get their models ready in just 3 hours, including fitting, alternations, hair, and makeup. Christian deems Chris' work "interesting... very innovative--and there was hair on it."
Rami shows a big blue jacket that's dramatic but a little too floppy and oddly constructed, and a gray/black dress that's gorgeous and flowy but a bit unfinished looking. His last item is a pretty, intricate black dress that's appealing though it looks kind of like shingles (house shingles, not the disease). Chris' first dress has a furry top, a metallic-looking section, and human hair--a little too odd for our taste. His second look is a hair skirt under an overly long and overly lacey halter top--dramatic, but perhaps not quite wearable. His last look is all black and topped with real drama, though it's so restrictive that his model can't walk.
If you were counting, that comes to three black dresses and one black/gray dress out of six looks--yawn.
With regard to his use of human hair, "I liked it because it's a little dark, a little creepy, a little goth," says Chris. Michael Kors says human hair is creepy, but at least Chris thought out of the box. The metal look on his first black dress came from black chrome safety pins--each row of pins took eight hours to make. MK says the looks are "overly designed and dark," deeming the tight black dress a "velvet condom." Chris chose his three looks from the black color section of his collection because they were the most dramatic. He says he deserves to go to fashion week to express a point of view from outside the fashion world.
Rami's dresses are deemed gorgeous and fantasy-oriented but also dark. Rami says he should go to fashion week because fashion is his calling. While Rami's coat was "overdone," the flowy gray/black dress was very commercial and wearable. Still, the judges thought he listened to direction and started creating crazy projects instead of safe ones. The judges are impressed with Chris' use of alternative materials. They still find Chris very costume, but Nina points out that many successful designers have started in costumes.
Chris won the fan texting vote, 58% to 42%.
Heidi says all of the looks felt "dark and overworked." Chris is praised for showing creativity, and Rami is praised for showing a different, refined point of view. Ultimately, Rami is in--going to Fashion Week! We guess the human hair was a little too much for Kors & Co., but Chris will surely go on to make more wonderfully crazy costumes.
Though we love Chris, we support Rami going to Fashion Week. We think he's a very professional, competent designer. If he continues to push himself creatively, he might come up with something remarkable for fashion week. Next week--the finale!--it looks like Christian's losing confidence and Jillian's losing one of her models. How will the designers handle the pressure? Will anyone crack? And, most importantly, who will win? Tune in to Bravo--or Bostonist--next week to find out!

Yes, for a fashion designer--and a good one, at that--Jillian's own wardrobe should be burned.
Check out Bravotv.com for the collections! Even Sweet P has one on there. I think Jillian's shows the most strength, but I really dislike her. I can't wait til next week!
Chris is going to make one of my costumes for a photoshoot and I cannot wait!!!
oooh, chris costume! jealous!
