Sports Redux: Keep Your Enemies Close

hank.jpgThe feud between Red Sox ownership and Hank "Spaulding Smails" Steinbrenner is escalating. After Hank moaned, "Red Sox Nation? What a bunch of [expletive] that is.", John Henry responded by sending Hank an honorary RSN membership card.

While we've taken our shots at the bloated "Red Sox Nation" phenomenon before - it's jumped the shark the way "Sweet Caroline" did, and Gino is in the process of doing - we recognize the need to circle the wagons when criticism comes from outside. Especially from the blowhard owner of the Atlanta Braves of the 2000s. We love Henry's response, meeting bluster with kindness, although we're troubled by the idea that Hank Steinbrenner may now be eligible to buy Green Monster seats or pose for a meet-and-greet with Wally.

Focusing on baseball for a second, we see that the Twins slapped Clay Buchholz and Craig Hansen around in yesterday's 8-2 loss. But Tim Wakefield said he felt really good pitching, which is the only thing that matters at this point.

Another home game against a mediocre team, another solid yet unspectacular win for the Celtics. After a back-and-forth first half, the C's dusted Atlanta, behind 30 from Pierce, a double-double from Perk, and the best effort from KG we've seen in a while. The Hawks are one thing, but the Garden will feel like late May on Wednesday, when the Pistons come to town. Sam Cassell might be there by then.

The Randy Moss situation remains unresolved. There's talk that Randy has been talking to his old friend Daunte Culpeper, also a free agent, and they may want to work out a deal where they can be together. Where that would be, is uncertain.
