Boston's favorite dancing fool has proven that the squeaky wheel really does in fact get the grease. Closer Jonathan Papelbon must have attended the Curt Schilling “How to Use the Media to Your Advantage School." After a week of complaining that he wasn’t being taking care of and how he should get the money he deserved all in the name of baseball, Papelbon got the money he wanted on Thursday afternoon.
According to Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe, Papelbon has agreed to a one-year contract worth $775,000. Although it’s not the $900,000 Ryan Howard money he was initially asking for, it’s hardly chump change. Last season, Papelbon made $425,000. That's quite a raise.
Perhaps Papelbon could use the money to get Boss, his French bulldog, a muzzle or obedience lessons, so we don’t lose another piece of Red Sox history.
