Discover Roxbury

Photographer derequito, whose work often appears in Photo of the Day, is now working for Discover Roxbury, and he's visualized just how much people are missing about the city:

Roxbury's is one of the poorest areas of the city, yet the residents are surrounded by historical riches. Important sites include Highland Park (the location from which George Washington and the Continental Army began their journey to drive the British out of Boston), the First Church of Roxbury (one of the oldest churches in the Boston area), the former residences of William Lloyd Garrison and Malcolm X, the National Museum of Afro-American Artists, and a wealth of murals from the Black Arts Movement.

Discover Roxbury gives tours of the neighborhood for individuals and students. Bostonist e-mailed derequito to find out more about Discover Roxbury's mission. He wrote, "I'm helping the organization design new tours for the adult market and raise its profile. Neighborhood tours are the primary focus, although some tours are also preceded by talks." He added that Discover Roxbury is part of the Roxbury Cultural Network.

We suggested that he should offer Google a free tour since, as he's pointed out in the past, their Street View car seems to have a blind spot for many parts of Boston, Roxbury included. (On the other hand, they seem to have an eye for shirtless city councilors.) We hope they take notice.
