The man struck and killed by a Shaw's truck at the corner of Mass Ave and Prospect at Central Square has been identified as 28-year-old Isaac Meyers. Meyers was a teaching fellow in classics at Harvard, the Crimson reports.
Friends remembered him last night at a memorial service. One friend told Matt Dunning of the Cambridge Chronicle that Meyers was getting a Master's in classic languages and translating Hebrew scriptures into Greek. He also played ukelele.
WHDH went to the scene and said that Meyers had been dragged for a block. They interviewed a Boston NOW employee who said, "It was horrible. They guy was right under the back wheels."
Comments on various sites have mentioned just how dangerous that area is for both drivers and pedestrians. Drivers taking turns too fast, cavalier pedestrians acting like they're not mortal, and no protected turns make it a real problem. Tell your friends to look both ways as they cross the street, or, if they're behind the wheel, to keep an eye out for peds.
There's also a lot of discussion over at Wicked Local about drivers, pedestrians and police officers. We've seen officers hand out tickets plenty of times at that intersection (it is right by the Cambridge police station), but they could be handing out more. Yesterday, we did see an officer shout at some people trying to cross the street as cars were going past, "No! You can't cross!" But how long will the heightened alert last before drivers and peds fall back into their old habits?
