The United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 World Water Day to call attention to the global issue of clean drinking water availability back in 1992. Since then, there have been hundreds of related events and activities the world over.
In 2007, the Tap Project, a grassroots organization in New York City, launched to help raise awareness and money for the campaign. This year the program goes nationwide. Here's how it works: From March 16-22, participating restaurants will invite diners to donate at least $1 when they order tap water that would usually be served for free. All the funds will be collected and donated to UNICEF who, with that $1, can provide a child with clean drinking water for 40 days.
While drinkable tap water is abundant in many countries, more than 2 billion people worldwide don't have regular access to clean drinking water.
According to the Tap Project website, nearly 80 Boston restaurants are participating. Visit your favorite this week!
