Reel Hub: New Releases Today

Drillbit TaylorAh, Drillbit Taylor. It sounds like the name of a strapping young man, ready to take on America with just the shirt on his back, the heart in his chest, and the drillbit in his hand.... ahh, who are we kidding? It sounds like the name of a crappy movie that's nothing more than an excuse for Owen Wilson to get paid millions of dollars thanks to millions of Americans inexplicably willing to waste their money on his crooked-nosed face. Let's just hope people pay cash for this film and don't use it to further contribute to any misunderstood credit crisis that may exist.

Far cooler than Owen Wilson (we used to kinda like him, but--You, Me, and Dupree? c'mon!) is the art of breakdancing. As portrayed in Planet B-Boy, it's an art and science rooted in love of music and movement. If you've never seen high-level breakdancing, you're in for a treat--you won't believe what some of these dancers are able to do. Planet B-Boy doesn't have a heck of a lot in the way of plot, but a film about something as enticing as breakdancing doesn't really need plot--just awesome imagery, which this movie has in spades.

Looks like Adam Carolla got envious of his old pal Dr. Drew's return to the limelight with Celebrity Rehab, so he decided to come up with his own way to re-enter America's heart (or possibly another body part) with The Hammer. No phallic comments need be made.

As usual, we sigh about the state of the Hollywood movie industry. But we smile, knowing that Boston will keep our cinephile selves happy this weekend with the Boston Underground Film Festival at the Brattle and Loews Harvard Square, as well as with a Manoel de Oliveira retrospective at the Brattle. Breathe deep, film fans--help is on the way!
