Commuter Rail Crash Causes Injuries, Shuts Down Part of Stoughton-Providence Line
Update: The number of injuries has shot up to 150, according to WBZ.
A commuter rail train hit a boxcar in Canton at about 5:25 this afternoon. All commuter havoc aside, this railroad accident is frightening. The Herald reports that 50 people were injured, "at least two of them seriously." WCVB states that 10 people were taken to hospitals.
The crash caused broken noses, and one passenger described flames and smoke. No one is sure how the boxcar wound up on the tracks in the first place. Right now, it appears that the train stopped, and then the boxcar rolled into it.
We also looked through our T Alerts, and we didn't find any related to this crash. However, the MBTA's website says shuttle buses are running between Readville Station and Sharon and Stoughton Stations "due to a medical emergency at Canton Junction Station." That was as of 6:15 pm.
