Megabus Vs. BoltBus: And Where Does That Leave Fung Wah?
Recently, BoltBus announced that it would be entering the low-cost bus fray. And now another company, Megabus, would like to be at your service for your rides to New York City. From the New York Times:
Two-year-old Megabus.com, a subsidiary of Coach USA, is based in Paramus, N.J., and is structured much like Southwest and other low-cost airlines. Tickets are sold on the Internet and by telephone, with the best deals for those who buy tickets the earliest. The first seats on the runs between New York and Boston sell for as little as $1, for one-way fares, with prices rising to as high as $14 as the departure date approaches.
And Megabus will offer free tickets to riders who book between May 30 and June 5. Chicagoist got the service two years ago and noted that the fares rise as the bus gets more popular, but we're not going to complain unless they go all Fung Wah on us.
But let's not be mean. Go here for a defense of Fung Wah. With all this competition, they could use a little love.

I am a Fung Wah convert. It's worth it just to avoid the nightmare that is Port Authority. Plus, I thoroughly enjoy the walk between the stop and the Canal Street Subway station. Finally, last minute tickets are not more expensive. Who pre-plans a bus trip to NYC??? :-) We'll see how profitable these new services are...or how convenient.
