The Sound of Tomorrow Today
The Boston Modern Orchestra project makes a case for the vitality of concert music tonight with a showcase of four world premieres. "Double Entendre: Premieres from Inspired Collaborations" features music from four young composers with interdisciplinary leanings and performances from the likes of the Firebird Ensemble. Recent Harvard Ph.D. and throat-singer Ken Ueno's (pictured) composition On a Sufficient Condition for the Existence of Most Specific Hypothesis is sure to be a highlight. Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory, 30 Gainsborough St., 8:00pm. $48-$10. (RS)
Kaiju
Kaiju Big Battel is returning to rock your world a little further south. Our sources inform us that "An epic showdown between Kaiju Champion Call-Me-Kevin and the number-one-contender Dusto Bunny is already slated for this exciting night of live monster mayhem, not to mention 37 blocks of crushable cityscape. Steam Powered Tentacle Boulder, Team Space Bug, and Dr. Cube’s Posse of mutant miscreants will also contend for Danger Cage supremacy." Phew. Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel, Providence, 7:30 pm, $16 advance/$18 door. Find out just what the hell kaiju is.
They're Crafty
CraftBoston continues. The Society of Arts and Crafts corrals more than 175 crafty types and offers objects ranging from hand-blown oil lamps to bookshelves made out of books. Seaport World Trade Center, South Boston, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. $15/$12. (RS)
Whether playing pastoral pop or grating noise -- or, more likely, both simultaneously -- the Boredoms will blow your mind. Let's just hope that the band's mastermind Yamatsuka Eye left his bulldozer at home in Japan. Thurston Moore's Northampton Wools opens. Paradise Rock Club, 967 Comm. Ave., 9:00pm. $17 (RS)
Music That Is Slightly Less Freaky
The 2nd Annual Alt-Country Extravaganza keeps on trucking. With a lot of trucker caps. Bands tonight include the brilliantly named Thunderpants Johnson's Hillbilly Orchestra, Autumn Hollow, The Dave Sammarco Band, The Beau Roland Band, The Bees Knees, Golden West Motor Lodge, Mike MacDonald and the Widow Makers, Lucky 57, and of course Cassavettes. Church, 6:00 pm, $10.
Comedy
Jimmy Tingle is going to run his campaign to the limit. He's got more stamina than Dennis Kucinich! He'll hold another campaign stop at the Regent Theatre, Arlington, 8:00 pm, $25/$30.
