Sports Redux: Spring Hopes Eternal

"Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in." - Michael Corleone

There are things that are a little confusing. There are things that out-and-out defy logic. Then there are the 2007-2008 Bruins. Left for dead a week ago, unable to score a goal and suffering a rash of untimely injuries, most of us figured the Bruins had as much chance to compete for the Stanley Cup this year as the Hartford Whalers did.

But whatever coach Claude Julien told them last week, it's working. The gritty B's won their third straight, knocking off Ottawa 4-0 and holding on to the window ledge for another day. P.J. Axelsson and Marco Sturm scored in the second, then Shane Hnidy and the red-hot David Krejci added insurance goals as Tim Thomas stopped everything Ottawa threw at him, looking like the confident, unsolvable Thomas of old. With four games to go, the B's cling to a 2-point lead over Washington; they could do themselves a favor tonight and knock Buffalo out of the race.

You like shutouts? Well, the Revolution have good news for you too. Steve Ralstman, Adam Cristman, and Sainey Nyassi connected as the Revs sort of avenged their MLS Cup loss by beating Houston 3-0. Taylor Twellman (frankly, the only Revolution player whose name we remember) missed the game with a bum knee.

More shutouts? Well, it's never happened in NBA history, but the combination of the dominant Celtics and the beyond-pathetic Heat tonight makes us wonder. Well, not really; we'll be happy if nobody gets hurt and the C's put them away early. Shaq's been traded, D-Wade's shelved, and coach Pat Riley's out walking the earth like Kung Fu. Should be a classic. At least we get to see Mark Blount and Ricky Davis again.

The Red Sox looked good in front of the largest MLB crowd ever (over 115K) at the LA Coliseum. It'll look even better when the games count again.

Good for the Bruins. I bet their hot streak will end when the playoffs. I hope not because they do play hard and are probably good guys.

But, I have an issue with the B's. Where is Rene Rancourt? The anthem singer yesterday was awful.

Glad to see that Boston fans so fondly remember the Whalers/Bruins rivalry!
