Why were there no figures or anecdotal evidence from the maple sugar producers in Vermont? As much as NH and MA would like it to be, Vermont is the national leader in terms of maple syrup production. What say them?
But, I would bet you that the increase in prices has more to do with the harsher than usual winter, tremendous snowfall that is hampering getting into the woods to check the taps and the lines, and the fact that it has been a colder than usual March so that the sap isn't even running yet. It may yet happen into April, but it will make for an abbreviated season.
And I will admit that some of my info might be out of date, but I still think a lot of maple producers use wood or coal to fire their evaporators.
