Reel Hub: 21 Cashes In

033108-21-the-movie.jpg21, the blackjack movie based on the real-life exploits of card-counting MIT students, was No. 1 at the box office this week. We're happy for it in that the movie makes geekiness sexy and thrilling, even if it did jumble up a few Boston landmarks.

Another doofy spoof of a movie genre, Superhero Movie, opened at No. 3, which proves no one can resist a fart joke. But we wonder if the studios could just make more money by re-releasing Airplane! every few months.

Stop-Loss, about the impact of the Iraq War, opened at No. 8, suggesting that moviegoers are either in a serious state of denial about the five-year war, or they'd rather see something like MASH that used the Korean War setting to critique the Vietnam War.

And pour one out for Run Fat Boy Run. It opened as a bomb, but it was co-written by Bostonist favorite Michael Ian Black, so we still have a soft spot for it. There's always overseas and DVD.

Promo poster for 21.
