Representing on Reality TV: We Were Robbed!

attachments/boston_caroline/031608-jim-bedford.JPGBeauty and the Geek: This week may have marked the saddest "Beauty and the Geek" episode ever to air. In the episode, the beauties and geeks finally split into pairs. MIT Chris was with helium-voiced Cara, Sweater Vest Tommy was with a blonde who looked like every other blonde in LA, and Jim was with a self-proclaimed tough gal named Tiffany. No one noted the irony.

Jim's partner immediately began the task of making him over. She gave him helpful tips, such as informing him that he needed to stop sleeping in his day clothes and start using conditioner. For the tasks, the geeks had to guide the beauties through a science fair presentation, while the geeks hat to go on Dr. Drew Pinsky's radio show and dispense love advice. During the science fair, MIT Chris proved himself the geek to beat as he patiently taught Cara how to demonstrate the functioning of earthquakes using a hard-boiled egg. They were victorious, and one Massachusetts geek was safe.

The geeks then headed to Dr. Drew's studio and shared their wisdom, although in theory they've never gotten laid and are not that swift in matters sexual. Somehow, Sweater Vest Tommy managed to come up with advice for someone about to have sex for the first time. Then he had to ruin the moment by slapping on the following geeky statement: "Just because I'm a law student, you wanna make sure you're both 18 years of age, or older." Despite his disclaimer, another Massachusetts geek was safe.

So Jim and Tiffany wound up getting sent to the elimination room. Jim must have been concerned about elimination because he asked his beauty to kiss him. She declined, but she was sweet about it. The two went up against a poet and another Hollywood blonde, and the Hollywood blonde clearly studied her material. Jim and Tiffany were sent packing. So the masses were denied what could have been one of the best makeovers in "Beauty and the Geek" history. We wanted to see Jim when they shaved off his beard and cut his hair--but we were robbed!

MIT Chris and Sweater Vest Tommy are still on the show, but they don't need that much of a makeover. Chris could use a good haircut, but the girls were already crawling on Sweater Vest Tommy, so the transformation won't be that impressive.

America's Next Top Model: Fatima had a good week this week, and she got to get into another fight. It appears that nothing galvanizes Fatima more than a good catfight given how she likes to spark conflict. This episode, she tussled with the punky woman, Lauren, because the punk poured out Fatima's coffee grinds. One does not mess with Fatima's coffee grinds.

Fatima kept needling Lauren for her kitchen etiquette, until Lauren dumped a bunch of coffee in a wineglass, shoved it toward Fatima, and declared, "Here's your &$% coffee, you big baby!" Then the camera had to bleep out numerous curses pouring from Lauren's dirty mouth, and Lauren told Fatima to "choke on it." Fatima sat there and didn't react, which only made Lauren madder. That's how Fatima rolls--she starts a fight, and then she sits back and watches the fireworks.

Besides the fighting, Fatima went on a go-see. She was a big hit with swimsuit designer Shoshanna, but another designer told her that she was too small for a size 2, which is pretty incredible if one's talking about models. Then Fatima had to go through yet another ridiculous shoot in which the models rolled around on wet mylar and tried to look alluring. Somehow, Fatima pulled it off and was the first one called for a picture from Tyra.

Next week promises to be good for us, but not for Fatima, as she encounters some sort of legal trouble, and her nemesis Lauren possibly cuts off her own finger.

The Next Food Network Star: The Food Network has released its cast list for "The Next Food Network Star," whose local casting call Bostonist attended. One of the people we remember meeting at the call, Jennifer Cochrane, from Rhode Island, made it. She's executive chef at Geppetto's and Briggs Corner restaurants. We remember that she was in the fun corner of the room, while everyone else at the audition was stunningly quiet. We thought someone from that corner was bound to make it, and we were right. The show will premiere on Sunday, June 1.
