Independent Film Festival of Boston Preview

iffbo.jpgIndependent Film Festival of Boston
April 23-29, Somerville, Brattle, & Coolidge Corner Theatres
Full Schedule (PDF)

With the Red Sox's (arguable?) success, Deval Patrick's big new book deal, and a Globe Pulitzer win, Boston hasn't exactly been out of the mainstream lately. But there are always great performances sitting just out of the spotlight, and the upcoming Independent Film Festival of Boston will provide some exposure for lesser-known movies by up-and-coming artists. Featuring narrative, documentary, and short features as well as several panel discussions, the festival promises to be a haven for film buffs and dilettantes alike.

From Austin's Zellner Brothers to Kids' Harmony Korine to photographer Lauren Greenfield to Chris Eigeman from The Last Days of Disco, the film directors are many and varied. Featured films star big names like Crispin Glover, Famke Janssen, and Woody Harrelson, as well as undiscovered actors who just might be the next big thing. We're excited about the Beaver Trilogy (fantastic name), My Effortless Brilliance (about a novelist played by the guy from Harvey Danger!), and Twelve (a yearlong "love letter to Boston" with different stories for each month) on the narrative side, and Crawford (Texas, where Bush's ranch is located), The Greening of Southie (about the Macallen Building), and Jump!) an exploration of competitive jump roping), but there are also tons of other films we're amped to see.

The festival opens with Brad Anderson's Transsiberian at 7:30 p.m. at the Somerville Theatre on Wednesday, April 23, and closes with Werner Herzog's Encounters at the End of the World at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. Finish up your April with some fantastic films--check out the Independent Film Festival of Boston! Films show all around town, so there's bound to be a showing in your hood.
