Sports Redux: Wednesday, Crummy Wednesday

lester2.jpgNobody around here enjoyed last night very much.

The Sox' listless loss to Detroit has us wondering where we chucked the Panic Button. The offense is anemic (did you catch Lugo coming six inches away from hitting into a triple play?). David Ortiz is off to a particularly wretched start, at .091. Mike Lowell jammed his thumb and we don't know how hurt he is. Jon Lester keeps digging holes for himself that he doesn't always get out of. The bullpen's still shaky (Mike Timlin's coming back, which means the Bryan Corey Era might be in its final hours).

All these troubling signs added up to a crummy 7-2 loss to the Tigers, who are the last MLB team off the schnide. And the Red Sox are no longer undefeated on American soil.

It's hard to know what to make of the Celtics' 109-95 loss in Washington. The starters rested, but then came back in. Big Baby and Rondo departed early. It was hard to tell exactly how hard everybody was trying. Plus, the Wizards have just gotten back two of their stars (Gilbert Arenas, especially, made some sick passes last night) and are justifiably strutting a little bit. It added up to a Wizard win, meaning they took three of four from the C's this year. It's not far-fetched to say we'll see Washington in the second round.

You know the Bruins and BC have postseason hockey games tonight. You know Tim Wakefield goes against Nate Robertson at Fenway. But while flipping around, check out the late NBA action between Denver and Golden State, tied for the 8th spot in the insane West with four games left to go. That should be an atmosphere.

There was some good news; a depleted Revolution team missing 5 starters (injuries and unjust suspensions) beat a pretty good Kansas City team on the road in the rainy Midwest. Their two teenaged Gambians are fast becoming the talk of the league, giving them depth that they sorely need.

Jon Lester continues to be an erratic, inconsistent pitcher. Hope that some day soon he harnesses the talent that he has.

Thanks for the tip on Nuggets-Warriors. That should be a very interesting game.

Lester's been consistent in his short pro career, imo.

The New England Revolution exist. Phew.
