Bostonist Fashion: Geek Chic

blue_sun_ladies.jpg

Bostonist loves geekwear, from simple t-shirts to elaborate homemade costumes. We admire all nerds loud & proud enough to wear clothing so obscure that the wearer may be the only person in a 100 mile radius who gets the joke. And in the coming weeks we'll be profiling the geekiest clothing we can find online and in the wild.

But today we're talking about what to do on those occasions when you need to go stealth-geek. When meeting potential in-laws, perhaps, or trying not to look too conspicuous while protesting Scientology. Here are some suggestions for keeping your geek cred while not having fifty people ask what your shirt means.

Last Exit to Nowhere sells a range of t-shirts featuring companies and places from some of the most famous sci fi and horror films of the last 30 years, from Weyland-Yutani to Camp Crystal Lake. The designs are colorful, cool, and don't draw attention to their geekiness.

Space Western and cult hit Firefly created an entire galaxy's worth of obscure references in just 14 episodes. Among the most aesthetically pleasing of these is the logo for shady and omnipresent corporation Blue Sun. Think Geek offers Blue Sun t-shirts in both men's and women's versions.

Attending a sporting event and don't think your "OMGWTFBBQ" hat will go over well with the crowd? No problem! Wear J!NX's "42" hat and pretend it's your old softball number. Meanwhile, any other stealth geeks in attendance know you're really sporting The Ultimate Answer to The Great Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

While this next shirt isn't a specific reference to anything sci-fi or computer related, Bostonist thinks glow-in-the-dark clothing totally counts as geekwear. Diesel Sweeties offers a shirt that's just a white heart in daylight, but glows to read "If you can read this, it's dark and you should kiss me." Perfect for those shy-but-endearing nerds who prefer to speak through their clothes.

Next week? Embracing your Uber-geek.
